Where Do Adjective Clauses Go? What about the commas? Adjective clauses, unlike adverb clauses, cannot begin a sentence. When an adjective clause is essential to the meaning of a sentence, it should not be set off from the rest of the sentence with commas –Every player who hits a homerun receives a trophy. Non-essential adjective clauses are surrounded by commas. –The boy, who graduated from Harvard, won the lottery.

A Few Examples The hamburgers that they served were overcooked. I plan to visit the town where my parents were born. I will never forget the time when we had two flat tires on a deserted highway. Her attitude, which was extremely positive, aided her recovery from surgery.
