Women Wizards Matching Activity ●Print out the slides ●Cut each slide so that the photo and name are on one half and the description is on the other half. ●Give each girl a half with a picture/name and a half with a description (not matching) ●Tell the girls to see if they can find the description to match their picture/name. ●Give the girls 10 minutes. ●After the time is up, have the girls report on what surprised them about these famous women.

2. Sheryl Sandberg She was born in 1969. She is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Facebook. She got a degree from Harvard in Economics. In 2012, she was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world according to Time magazine.

3. Ada Lovelace She lived from 1815-1852. She was an analyst of Charles Babbinger’s “analytical engine” (an early mechanical computer) and is considered the “first computer programmer”. There was a computer programming language named after her!

4. Hedy Lamarr. She lived from 1913-2000. She was a very beautiful and popular movie star during the 1940’s. In 1942, she co-invented an early form of spread-spectrum broadcasting, which helped us win WWII and is used in our cell phone technology today.

5. She lived from 1906-1992. She was a U.S. Navy officer. She developed of the first compiler for a computer programming language, so instead of writing code in 1’s and 0’s we can write code in English. She invented the UNIVAC I and COBOL computer language She found a real bug (a moth) in this big computer - we now call fixing any mistake in the code as debugging. Rear Admiral Grace Hopper

6. She is a partner software engineer for Spotify. She is also the founder of PyLadies in San Francisco, a group of women who code in Python (a popular computer programming language). She got a degree in finance and economics from Babson College in 2008, but fell in love with programming in 2011. She says, “my journey in learning how to code isn’t over. 7. She works on security for the National Intelligence Agency in the summers and currently attends University of California Berkeley where she is majoring in Arabic and Computer Science. She uses algorithms to solve hard problems in Cyber Security for the U.S. Government. She developed a program to check modules loaded on external computers for the purpose of computer network misuse. 8. She is a Program Manager on the Xbox One Engineering team at Microsoft. She graduated from Georgia Tech, with a degree in computer science with concentrations in devices and artificial intelligence where she conducted research in the field of robotics. 9. A graduate of MIT, she invents new ways for humans to interact with computers. She worked at Apple for the Human Interface Device Prototyping team. 10. She is a Senior Software Engineer for Microsoft. She got a degree in Computer Systems Engineering in 2006 from Tecnologico de Monterrey. Paola Mejia Minaya

11. She got her computer science degree at Stanford University. She is the Co-Founder and CEO of Polyvore, a new interactive fashion website. This company is a mix of everything she loves – art, computer technology and fashion. On her 30th birthday, her co-workers all dressed in exactly what she wears every day — combat boots, black jeans, and a black top with cutouts — and it took her until the end of the day to finally get the joke. 12. She was born in 1968 and is the Chief Executive Office CEO of YouTube. She was named to Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2015. In 1999, she was the first marketing manager at Google. She is a mother of five children. 13. She runs the product, design and marketing teams at Code.org as the Vice President of Product and Marketing. Before that, she designed software for Xbox 360. Outside of work, she volunteers teaching computer science, literacy and English to students and refugees. Alice Steinglass

She is a Pakistani activist who speaks out for the education of girls and women in countries where it has been forbidden. 15. She lived from 1917 – 1996 in England. She was a cryptanalyst who was best known for her work as a code-breaker at Bletchley Park during World War II. She was the only woman to work a the center of the quest to crack the German Enigma secret cipher. She was recently played by Keira Knightley in the movie The Imitation Game. Joan Clarke

16. She is the Vice President and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s Information Systems and Global Solutions business. 17. She became the world's first Hispanic female astronaut in 1991. She received degrees in physics and electrical engineering. She is a veteran of four space flights getting more than 950 hours in space as a mission specialist and flight engineer. 18. She was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This Latina runs the Computer Science Education in Media at Google striving to banish stereotypes about computer science in TV and movies. Since founding the initiative in 2014, she has worked with TV shows like Disney Junior's "Miles from Tomorrowland" to encourage more inclusive portrayals of what an engineer or computer scientist looks like. 19. She was born in 1982 in Pune, India. She is a computer engineer. She was the first female engineer hired by the incorporation Facebook Inc. She transitioned from engineering to product management at Facebook, where she oversaw Facebook Platform and News Feed. In 2012 she joined Dropbox as Vice President of Operations. Ruchi Sanghvi

20. She was the first female engineer at Google and became CEO of Yahoo in 2012, at the age of 37. She was one of only 20 female CEOs in charge of a Fortune 500 company.
