2 SIMILE A simile compares two unlike things using the words like or as.

3 THIS IS NOT A SIMILE: She had a phone just like mine!

4 THIS IS A (LAME) SIMILE Jim ran as slow as a tortoise.

5 THIS IS A MUCH BETTER ONE! “The old man’s house was like a set ripped straight from a scene from an old Universal horror movie, somehow cheesy and creepy at the same time.”

6 MAKE A (NOT-LAME) SIMILE THAT DESCRIBES ONE OF THESE PICTURES

7 METAPHOR - A metaphor that compares two unlike items without using “like” or “as”.

8 THIS IS NOT A METAPHOR… Mr. Pangelinan is the coolest person who has ever lived. But it’s true!

9 THIS IS A (LAME) METAPHOR! Jim is a real pig!

10 THIS IS A GOOD METAPHOR! She was a blazing sun amongst a sky of dying stars, illuminating the dim night darkness of my life.

11 MAKE YOUR OWN METAPHOR!

12 PERSONIFICATION Gives human qualities to non-human things.

13 NOT PERSONIFICATION! The dog yawned.

14 (KINDA LAME) PERSONIFICATION The dog barked a hearty laugh when I tripped.

15 GOOD PERSONIFICATION! The metal of the hull shrieked in deathly agony as the iceberg rent the Titanic’s foundations apart.

16 WRITE YOUR OWN PERSONIFICATION!

17 HYPERBOLE A statement or description that has been exaggerated for effect.

18 NOT HYPERBOLE! My backpack is so heavy!

19 (LAME) HYPERBOLE! My backpack weighs a ton!

20 GOOD HYPERBOLE! My backpack weighs as much as a dozen elephants strapped to a boulder that’s swimming in a lake of dark matter!

21 HONE YOUR HYPERBOLES!

22 PARADOX -A statement that appears to be self- contradictory or silly, but may include a hidden truth. -It can also illustrate an opinion or statement contrary to traditional ideas. -This one is hard!
