Activity 1: True or False? Task: On your table are six ‘psychological’ statements. As a table, decide if you think the statements are true and false. Make sure you can explain why you selected true or false. 6 Minutes

True or False? Statement 1 1) Taxi drivers have larger brain regions associated with memory in comparison to non-taxi drivers. Maguire et al. (2000) found that taxi drivers have a significantly larger hippocampus (a part of the brain associated with memory) in comparison to non-taxi drivers.
5
True or False? Statement 2 2) Playing Dr Kawashima’s braining training games on the Nintendo DS increases the connections in the brain and improves memory and IQ. An article by Novella (2013) provides evidence against the belief that braining training games increase intelligence.
6
True or False? Statement 4 3) If one monozygotic twin (identical twin) is homosexual there is approximately a 50% chance that the other twin will be homosexual also. Bailey and Pillard (1991) found a concordance rate of 52% in monozygotic twins for homosexuality, in comparison to a concordance rate of 22% in dizygotic twins (non-identical).
7
True or False? Statement 4 4) If one monozygotic twin suffers from depression, there is approximately a 45% chance that the other win will suffer from depression. McGuffin et al. (1996) found a concordance rate of 45% in monozygotic twins for major depression, in comparison to a concordance rate of 20% for zygotic twins.

True or False? Statement 5 5) Listening to Mozart improves concentration. Steele et al. (1999) reports a failure to replicate the Mozart effect in research and concludes that there is little to no evidence to support the intellectual programmes based on the existence of the Mozart effect.
9
True or False? Statement 6 6) Psychology is a science. Psychology is the scientific study of behaviours and mental functions American Psychological Association.

Memory – Why is our memory for crimes inaccurate? Attachment – Do our relationships with our parents determine our future relationships? Psychological Approaches – How has Psychology developed over the century and what do different Psychologists believe. Abnormality – What makes some people more/less ‘normal’? Research Methods – How do Psychologists conduct psychological research.

Zimbardo (1973) The Stanford Prison Experiment
13
Zimbardo (1973) Half of the class will now be assigned the role of ‘prisoner’ and the other half will be assigned the role of ‘prison guard’. Task: Now consider the following three questions and write you answers in the space provided, on your handout: 1.How do you feel about being assigned the role of prisoner/prison guard? 2.How would you behave towards people in your own group (other prisons/guards)? 3.How would you have towards people in the other group? Why?
14
Zimbardo (1973) Now let’s see what actually happened… Discussion Question: Did the prisoners/guards act the same as you said… Click here for the video.here
15
What do you think? Discussion Questions: Were you surprised by what you saw? What does this study tell us about human behaviour? Do you think it was right for Zimbardo to carry out this study? (Are there any problems)
