1 16.5 Personality Disorder and Drug Addiction Personality Disorders: maladaptive or inflexible ways of dealing with others and one’s environment. I.) Antisocial Personality: a personality disorder characterized by irresponsibility, shallow emotions, and lack of conscience. - guilt and anxiety have no place in the antisocial personality. Theories/explanations: 1.) imitating own antisocial parents. 2.) lack of discipline or problems during childhood.

2 3.) dysfunction of the nervous system. Personality Disorders: -Antisocial -Dependent -Histrionic -Obsessive-Compulsive -Paranoid -Schizotypal II.) Drug Addiction Psychological dependence: use of a drug to such an extent that a person feels nervous and anxious without it.

3 PD: alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, cocaine, marijuana, and amphetamines. -when deprived they become restless and irritable. -In addition to psychological dependence, drugs can lead to physiological addiction. Addiction: a pattern of drug abuse characterized by an overwhelming and compulsive desire to obtain and use the drug. Tolerance: physical adaptation to a drug so that a person needs an increased amount in order to produce the original effect.

4 Withdrawal: the symptoms that occur after a person discontinues the use of a drug to which he or she has become addicted. Alcoholism: the country’s most serious drug problem. -Researchers estimate that nearly 77% of all high school seniors have consumed alcohol at some point in their lifetime. -called a “social drug” in small doses because it slows down our inhibitions. As drinks increase our psychological and physiological functions begin to shut down. Perceptions and sensations become distorted. Can eventually lead to unconsciousness and death.

5 Alcoholism may develop from both environmental and genetic factors. 3 to 4x higher risk of becoming an alcoholic if a family member is. Treatment: 1 st Help the person through the violent withdrawal (delirium tremens). Drugs-Antabuse Psychotherapy Alcoholics Anonymous AA *one problem is that our society tends to encourage social drinking and tolerate the first stage of alcoholism.
