5 Media center rules Use shelf markers in a SAFE way Put materials away when you are finished Return all books on time or have them renewed Keep your library card in a safe place Keep track of your time Raise your hand and ask for help when you need it Follow the Computer Lab rules Do not damage pencils, computers, puppets, cards, sitting area, and other items in the room Follow the Code of Conduct in the Media Center and the WHOLE school Use your inside voice. The Yacker Tracker is listening!! Do not give out your Reading Counts password. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6 Behavior Plan 1 st offense: A verbal warning is given. 2 nd offense: Student will sit in time out area. 3 rd offense: We discuss the situation. If an apology is given or the appropriate thing is done they may rejoin the group. The teacher is informed of the situation and it is marked for their conduct grade in classroom. 4 th offense: Note to parent or phone call home. 5 th offense: A detention may be issued or sent to the office. ** If the student is sent down to do research or to get materials independently, student will be asked to leave and a note is sent back to the teacher.

7 SAFETY PROCEDURES Fire Alarm – Exit south side (check-out side, turn right in hallway, turn left and exit recess doors.) Windstorm Alarm – Go to story pit Tornado Alarm – Go to hallway on 2 nd grade side in front of bulletin board. ALWAYS proceed in a quiet and orderly fashion.

8 7 Lost/Damaged Books Do not loan your ID card to anyone and NEVER check out books for a friend! You are responsible for everything checked out with your id card!

10 9 I.D. CARDS ID cards are required to: Check out books

11 10 ID cards are NOT required to: Renew a book Return a book Take Reading Counts quizzes Visit the library

12 11 KEEP YOUR I.D. CARD IN YOUR CLASSROOM AT ALL TIMES!

13 Check out procedures Scan your student card Scan your books Scan the pink card to clear the screen.

14 How many books can you check out?? Kindergarten – 1 book 1 st Grade – 2 2 nd Grade – 2 3 rd Grade – 3 4 th Grade – 4 5 th Grade - 5 **But we will start out with checking out only 1-3 books until you can show me you are responsible!! YOU CAN ONLY CHECK OUT ONE NEW BOOK AT A TIME…LEAVE SOME FOR OTHERS!!

15 14 Renew it! OVERDUE BOOKS MAY NOT BE RENEWED! RETURN BOOKS ON TIME!

16 15 Check it in! Place in the book drop OR Have a library worker check it in Don’t just leave books on the counter and walk away!

18 Computer Rules o SHARE the computers!! o If there is a line for RC quizzes, you may only take ONE quiz at a time!! o Open only ONE program at a time. o Use a gentle touch. o If the monitor is dark, check the power button light. If it is orange, press the space bar and it will turn on automatically. o Keep the computer area in neat order when finished.

19 18 Computer Use Computers are for schoolwork only! NEVER, EVER PRINT ANYTHING WITHOUT ASKING!! NEVER, EVER USE THE COLOR COPIER!!! Research Looking for books Taking RC quizzes Typing reports

20 What kind of books do we have Fiction - These are books that tell a made-up story * They are located on the short shelves Non-fiction - These are books that will give you FACTS on something you are interested in * These are located on the wall Biographies - These are books that tell you about a REAL person * They are located on the wall across from check out

21 Even MORE books… Reading Counts paperback Young Hoosier Books Paperback books that have the colored dots on them - These are located in baskets right above the story pit * These are books that will count toward earning points and prizes. I’ll tell you more… Special Books selected for Indiana students to read. - These are located on the windowsill. * These books are considered the TOP PICKS for students each year. They are also the books that will be used in Vigo Counties Battle of the Books in May!!

22 What IS Reading Counts?? This is a program where students read specific books, take a quiz on each books, and earn points and PRIZES!! WHO is it for? Reading counts is for grades 1-5 SRI is for grades 2-5

23 22 DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST FEW DAYS OF THE MONTH TO TAKE A QUIZ!!!

26 Maggie’s Garden is HERE!! Now you can sit in the sunshine and READ!! Remember…NO throwing rocks and NO looking in the other classroom window!! 
