ReStore 1 Draft strategy for ESRC and ReStore Angela Dale University of Manchester

ReStore 2 Background context ESRC unusual internationally in funding development of on-line resources But many related activities that need to inform ReStore –Jorum –DCC –UKDA-Store –ESRC’s Society Today

ReStore 3 Strategic questions What should be included in ReStore’s remit? –Initially defined as RMP, RDI and NCRM resources –More broadly defined as resources that will not function effectively if they are NOT maintained –Clear distinction between archiving and curation –Also distinct from remit of JORUM for re-use and re- purposing Underlying rationale that we should retain resources that have cost a lot to develop

ReStore 4 Strategic criteria for adoption by ReStore Resource needs to be: –of demonstrable importance to social science –of high quality Loss of value if resource not maintained –Resource will not ‘work’, eg needs to include new version of software –Resource becomes outdated; links fail; But some resources are too specialised –Need large amount of very specialised work to maintain/update, eg occupational coding software

ReStore 5 Restricted access or free to all? Open access resources provide a greater benefit to more people –but there will be some need for restrictions, eg using Athens, for some materials Important that resources can be found using standard search engines

ReStore 6 Adoption of resource for fixed or infinite time? Fixed length of time (eg 3 or 5 years) –Allows re-assessment periodically to ensure resource is still relevant / still being used Need clear criteria to allow a resource to be dropped by ReStore at end of period, eg – level of use –cost of further maintenance –changes in technology

ReStore 7 Should ESRC meet the cost of long-term maintenance? If ESRC provided initial funding it has a ‘duty’ to ensure the continued benefit of the resource BUT could easily become VERY expensive

ReStore 8 Are there alternative/additional models? Maintenance by universities Maintenance by a commercial company Maintenance by a community of users
