The Center for Coalfield Justice, with support from the Colcom Foundation, has developed a report of Community Indicators of Population Health that shows how the 67 counties of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania compare with one another. This Executive Summary outlines some of the findings from the full report, titled Community Indicators of Population: A baseline report focusing on Greene and Washington Counties, PA. This is a follow-up and companion to our Community Indicators of Environmental Justice report. Using 47 different indicators arranged in six categories, this report characterizes each county in terms of 1) demographics, 2) documentation of disease, 3) health of children and care for seniors, 4) access to quality care, 5) access to food, and 6) land, air, and water. The demographic indicators characterize some common population variables. The documentation of disease indicators characterize the prevalence of common diseases. The health of children and care for seniors indicators characterize the health and wellness of our children and specific care facilities for our seniors. The access to quality care indicators characterize health-care infrastructure. The access to food category reveals uneven patterns of retail food outlets. The land, air, and water category shows the environmental impacts experienced primarily from the mining of coal and the drilling for natural gas in shale. A Z-Score statistic was computed for every county for each variable. The Z-Score shows how many standard deviations each county is from the average of all 67 counties. Z-Scores that are two standard deviations or more away from the mean can indicate extreme conditions. We hope this summary sparks your interest to read the entire report.
