To promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries. To maintain close and beneficial cooperation with existing international and regional organizations with similar aims and purposes, and explore all avenues for even closer cooperation among themselves.

5. The Aim and Purpose of ASEAN To collaborate more effectively for the greater utilization of their agriculture and industries, the expansion of their trade. To promote active collaboration and mutual assistance on matters of common interest in the economic, social, cultural, technical, scientific and administrative fields.

7. The United States began engagement with ASEAN as a dialogue partner in 1977. Has actively maintained cooperation with ASEAN ever since. Starting in the early 1990’s, development cooperation has increased dramatically through the launch of economic programs focusing on trade and investment, technology transfer, and education.

8. As a Mission of United States to ASEAN; “The U.S. Mission to ASEAN will engage ASEAN as an active, consistent, and reliable partner in the region. We will support our common interests in ASEAN’s ambitious program of regional integration and ensure that ASEAN plays a role in the emerging regional political and economic architecture that safeguards critical U.S. economic and security interests.”
