Habitat In the summer, they live in open fields and meadows with milkweed. In the winter, they live in California and Mexico, in the mountains. Range The Monarch Butterfly lives in North America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. Monarch butterflies migrate to and from Mexico to Canada. It is a 3,000 mile journey.

Life Cycle After two weeks eating plants, they become two-inch-long caterpillars. After a while, the caterpillar attaches itself to a convenient twig. Then they go into the pupa stage. Look at me Monarch butterflies are big and colorful. They are orange, white, and black. When they are caterpillars, they are yellow, white, and black. They have four short legs and two long ones. These butterflies have three body parts, such as a head, a thorax, and an abdomen.

Interesting facts Monarch butterflies are toxic because they eat milkweed. A Monarch Butterfly flaps its wings 5 - 12 times a second. One rain can be deadly to thousands of Monarchs. There is a milkweed that is not good for Monarch butterflies. They are endangered.
