Developer: chemistry professor Michael Gratzel, Federal Polytechnic School, Switzerland, 1988. Operation: Between glass panels or embedded in plastic, along with an ionide- containing electrolyte, organic or ruthenium dyes are coated on titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanocrystals, that work as the semiconductor. The dye absorbs light and creates electrons, which are transferred to the semiconductor and then out into a circuit. ©www.tdi.dk ©eecse.sdstate.edu

WHILE SILICON THIN-FILM CELLS... Degrade in sunlight over time Are low efficient under indirect sunlight...DYE-BASED CELLS Are longer lasting Work well at wide angles Inspired by photosynthesis: more powerful in a wider range of light and temperature conditions. More efficient indoors: dye absorbs diffuse sunlight & fluorescent lighting well. Considerably cheaper to manufacture Ideal for clothing and portable applications © National Renewable Energy Laboratory

DSC CELLS COATED ONTO METAL ROOFS & WINDOWS: Turns buildings themselves into a solar cell. The cells will produce energy for the host building and feed any excess back into the grid. Uses a low-cost, roll-to-roll process for its dye-sensitised cells Its cells are over 12% efficient at converting light into electricity Its flexible solar modules produce 0.5 Watt under direct sunlight “ DYE SENSITISED THIN FILM as a technology is a significant improvement on traditional silicon-based solar cells in that its energy payback is measured in months instead of years. ”

G24i’s DYE SENSITISED THIN-FILM CAN: Be incorporated into a wide array of energy-saving products, as well as:power-generating windows and tents. Radically extend the mobility and utility of mobile devices. Generate electricity in remote locations. PERSONALISING SOLAR POWER The first commercial product to incorporate dye-sensitised thin-film cells hits the market... ©G24i...For on-the-go recharging of portable gadgets!

Sony is also experimenting on the DSSC technology, with no commercial products on the market yet. ©sony Power generation during the day, from sunlight or ambient light indoors. A conceptual proposal for a lamp: “ The technology has attracted interest in recent years because manufacturing these solar cells is more environmentally friendly and less costly than manufacturing conventional silicon solar cells. Designers also face fewer restrictions in the colors and shapes that can be created. ”
