Ancient Egypt The arts

Intro Most of what we know about ancient Egypt is from the arts, from paintings, sculptures, architecture and translations.

Writing Hieroglyphics were used by Egyptians, starting around 3000 BCE. Were originally a collection of picture signs. Each picture representing an entire word or idea. Writing hieroglyphics took a long time and a lot of effort. Later developed to represent sounds. New simpler versions were made like hieratic and demotic.

Literature Some of the pieces of writing we’ve found include stories of adventure, fairy tales, poems, and love stories among religious works and wise sayings and pieces of advice. Included among these works is Instructions of the Vizier Ptahhotep. One of the oldest books in the world.

Painting and sculpture The Ancient Egyptians were well known for their Art. It was mostly made for tombs and temples The walls were often covered with bright paintings meant to give their people a peaceful passage to the afterlife These paintings and sculptures reflected perfection, harmony, and balance. It was rarely found to have one reflecting sickness and old age. Many sculptures were of religious objects, festivals, and important people or gods.

Architecture The Ancient Egyptians weren’t only known for the creation of the pyramids. They also constructed brilliant Temples of limestone, used for religious ceremonies and funerals. They generally consisted of three main sections. A small shrine, a great hall, and an open courtyard. The most famous of these is the temple at Karnak, dedicated to the God Amon.It is positioned on the northern edge of Thebes, and built by Seti I and Ramses II during the New Kingdom.
