Analysis of the Downwind Gone Bad Accidents are usually a caused by a sequence of poor choices. Let’s list them. Flying a pattern with a downwind that is into a head wind. Look at the wind sock and wind shadows on the lakes to determine the wind direction Which way did the tow plane land. Never fly the pattern at less than the recommended speed plus ½ the wind speed. Turn base when appropriate for the conditions, not at a particular place.
