Sherlock Holmes A famous detective. A fictional character created by Conan Doyle. He is very good at reasoning( 推理 ) and observing( 观察 ). In the stories, he was never employed by the police. For more than a century his name has been known in every country of the world; and not only his name, but his appearance too.

He was however the great detective‘s loyal companion. Holmes was aware of his value - he said to him on one occasion: “it may be that you are not yourself luminous( 发亮的 ), but you are a conductor ( 导 体 ) of light".

Her uncle would get her money if she died; After examining the room, the hole in the wall and the bell rope, Holmes became worried. He told her that her life was in danger and that it was not safe for her to sleep again in that room.
