Marriage in the New Testament On the Issue of Marriage The Wedding Feasts Christ’s very first miracle, the very first manifestation of the new creation He would bring about by His act of redemption. His presence in the wedding values marital union. Marriage will be an efficacious sign of Christ’s presence.

Marriage in the New Testament Question on Divorce Matthew 19: 3-11 3 Some Pharisees approached him, and tested him, saying, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?" 4 He said in reply, "Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female' 5 and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'?
5
Marriage in the New Testament 6So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate." 7They said to him, "Then why did Moses command that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss (her)?" 8 He said to them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery." 10 [His] disciples said to him, "If that is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry." 11 He answered, "Not all can accept [this] word, but only those to whom that is granted.

Marriage in the New Testament This is an affirmation of God’s original plan, male and female marriages. The tension of misinterpretation –Stubbornness of heart was the main reason for allowing divorce, even polygamy –To be fruitful is a vocation –Original purpose is union in love and fruitfulness in the procreative task. Where sexuality is integrated.

Marriage in the New Testament 2 Important Aspects of Marriage 1. The Property of Unity- excludes extra marital relationships or any form of polygamy 2. The Property of Indissolubility- means “NO” to divorce and re-marriage. Christ brings back the covenantal character of marriages- to reflect God’s enduring faithfulness in spite of man’s unfaithfulness

Marriage in the New Testament Celibacy in the Light of Marriage The state of being single, choosing to totally give up marriage and family life, in order to consecrate one’s self to Jesus and His salvific mission. Celibacy serves as a means for appreciating the symbolic and sacramental value of marriage. Celibacy directs us to higher reality, to God’s heavenly kingdom, where marriage will no longer be necessary.

Marriage in the New Testament Marriage in St. Paul’s Teachings 1 Cor. 7: 1-2,5 1 Now in regard to the matters about which you wrote: "It is a good thing for a man not to touch a woman," 2 but because of cases of immorality every man should have his own wife, and every woman her own husband. 5 Do not deprive each other, except perhaps by mutual consent for a time, to be free for prayer, but then return to one another, so that Satan may not tempt you through your lack of self-control.
10
Marriage in the New Testament Paul emphasized the values of self control and the value of sexual act in married life. Sexual act is the “right” of both husband and wife. Both offers to the other the conjugal rights. “For the wife does not rule over her own body, the husband does, and for the husband does not rule over his own body, the wife does” Concessions could be made if there was common consent, “that you may devote yourself to prayer”

Marriage in the New Testament Eph. 5: 21-25, 28-32 21 Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body. 24 As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her
12
Marriage in the New Testament 28 So (also) husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 "For this reason a man shall leave (his) father and (his) mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.
13
Marriage in the New Testament The meaning of “submission” is to be understood as “regards to the Lord” Leadership is not authoritarian kind, rather of service. It could be concluded that the weightier obligations is the husband’s, and not of the wife to her husband. Paul focused on the link between Christ ad the Church, making this link as model to the relationship between husband and wife.
