CAnet 4 LHC network resources US LHC network working group meeting Oct. 23, 2006 Thomas Tam CANARIE Inc.
2
Agenda >CANARIE commitment to HEPNet and TRIUMF >T0-T1(CERN – TRIUMF) lightpath >T1-T2 lightpaths >10GE LANPHY testing >T0-T1 backup strategies
3
CANARIE commitment >CANARIE has committed to HEPnet Canada to provide a 10G lightpath from T1 site (TRIUMF) to CERN. – Vancouver – NYC – Amsterdam – Geneva >The Canada portion of the 10G lightpath will be shared among all T2 sites. >Through UCLP TRIUMF would be able to control and manage the 10 lightpath and partition it as needed to establish a end-to-end lightpath to a T 2 site or between two T2 sites.

Current T1 – T2 1G lighpaths >Two T2 sites are connected in 1G and completed in the month of Sept., 2006 – U. of Toronto – U. of Victoria >Local loops – UofT. on Dark fiber – UoV. through CWDM – TRIUMF through CWDM >Routing ???
9
10GE LANPHY testing #1 >Why ??? – Currently 10G lightpath based on 10GE WANPHY technology takes up a whole OC192 SONET circuit. – There is no easy way to share the resource without additional equipment at the edge. – Need a solution that similar to GE GFP-F mapping to SONET/SDH. >Nortel OME6500 10GE Ethernet Private Line (EPL) card >Features – Provides 10GE-Base-R (IEEE 802.3ae compliant) Ethernet Private Line services - point to point only – GFP-F encapsulation to carry through SONET/SDH: CCAT: STS-192c/VC-64c VCAT: STS-3c-nv/VC4-nv where n=1 to 64 – Asymmetric Flow control and Full-duplex only supported – 10 GE per port – Jumbo frames supported – A maximum differential delay of 108ms between the VCAT group members for 10GE port. – the Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme(LCAS) – Future release

10GE LANPHY testing # 2
11
10GE testing LANPHY # 3 >Sept. 20: Received two prototype cards for testing – One is connected to Carleton U. and other one to TRIUMF >Oct. 24 – 27: Test 1 Carleton U. and Nortel Lab in Ottawa – Testset to testset – Verify the functionalities of the card >Oct. 30 – Nov. 3: Test 2 Carleton U. and TRIUMF – Server to server file transfer – Wade Hong and Steven McDonald will work out the test detail >Nov. 6 – ???: Test 3 TRIUMF and CERN – Wade and Steven will work on detail >Interop testing with Alcatel 10GE EPL card
12
T0 – T1 Back up circuit >Primary path - 10G lightpath >Backup path – 1G lightpath >Both lightpaths should be physically diverse >L3 re-routing if the 10G lightpath is down MANLAN, NYC SURFNet, AMS 1 GE GbE Vancouver Geneva 10G 1 GE over SURFnet 10G CANARIE 10G GEANT2 10G Wave
13
T0 – T1 backup scenario >Take the advantage of VCAT/LCAS functionality of 10GE EPL card. – Provide L1 redundancy, – A circuit down will affect half of the lightpath, the other 5G will remain up, no L3 rerouting involved. MANLAN, NYC SURFNet, AMS Vancouver Geneva 5G 10GE LAN
