A summary is condensed version of a larger reading. It is told in your own words How does the text relate or make an impact? We SUMMARIZE and REFLECT to understand the meaning of the text. It make the text relevant.
3
When writing a summary answer the essential questions: Who? What? Where? When? Why How? So What?
4
Who is the story or statement about ? Who is involved? - this could be the main character, or a supporting character - the speaker - the intended audience
5
The main idea and most important points – what is going on or being spoken about.
6
The setting. City, country, building, etc. Include details (is there furniture? Sound?)
7
“He saw, in that instant, the Lowe's theater sign, blocks ahead past Fiftieth Street; the miles of traffic signals, all green now; the lights of cars and street lamps; countless neon signs; and the moving black dots of people. And a violent instantaneous explosion of absolute terror roared through him. For a motionless instant he saw himself externally--bent practically double, balanced on this narrow ledge, nearly half his body projecting out above the street far below--and he began to tremble violently, panic flaring through his mind and muscles, and he felt the blood rush from the surface of his skin” -Jack Finney, “Contents of the Dead Man’s Pocket”

SummaryReflection Who- the protagonist, Tom Benecke What - Tom is looking down on Lexington Ave. from the side of his apartment building. He sees the traffic lights, and people below. Where - outside of his window on the 8 story hanging on the ledge
9
Provide details about the timing. Historical Relevant to other points in the story Time of day Age of the characters or audience
10
The cause and effect: What caused this to happen? What effect might it have?
11
What was the process – what came first, second, then last?
12
SummaryReflection When - after his wife leaves to go to the movies in the paper filled out the window set in 1950’s Why: because toms yellow paper with this is from work with out the window. he wants a promotion and that paper has all of his notes How -Tom climbed out the window after a draft floated his paper out of it. He walked across the ledge to reach it and unable to get back in the house So What - this scene in the text defines the external conflict. Tom faces what will happen if he falls.
13
When writing a reflection, focus on making connections: Text to text Text to world Text to self Text to author
14
What literature has similar features? Is there a movie or song that you can relate this to? What is universal about this piece?
15
What current or past events in world history match? For example: A book that references displeasure with government could be tied to the Revolutionary War, or the current wars in the Middle East
16
How do you relate to the text? How does it apply to you? What examples can you provide from your life that relate?
17
What does this tell us about the author’s purpose? Why did the author use these words and use these techniques?

SummaryReflection Who- the protagonist, Tom BeneckeText to Text: Empire State of Mind by: Alicia Keys and Jay Z; they talk about the lights of the city What - Tom is looking down on Lexington Ave. from the side of his apartment building. He sees the traffic lights, and people below. Text to Self: This reminds me of walking through NYC with my friends. The lights in the city always leave me in awe, and I can only imagine the effect of being above them on a building Where - outside of his window on the 8 story hanging on the ledge Text to World: NYC is known for Lexington Ave. and as the city that never sleeps. Yet, like Tom says people ignore the screams they hear. When - after his wife leaves to go to the movies in the paper filled out the window set in 1950’s Text to Author: I belive that Finney used this paragraph to contrast to beauty of the city and Tom’s fear. He details the lights and what Tom sees – and emphasizes how far away it all is. Why: because toms yellow paper with this is from work with out the window. he wants a promotion and that paper has all of his notes How -Tom climbed out the window after a draft floated his paper out of it. He walked across the ledge to reach it and unable to get back in the house So What - this scene in the text defines the external conflict. Tom faces what will happen if he falls.
