Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 EGEE to EGI Transition Meeting 2 Overview What is the AppDB? Who developed it and why? What is the current status? Transition to EGI Credits

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 What is the AppDB A registry of applications ported to the EGEE grid infrastructure. One database with two web front-ends –http://appdb.eu-egee.org/ (regional oriented)http://appdb.eu-egee.org/ –http://grid.ct.infn.it/egee_applications (application porting oriented)http://grid.ct.infn.it/egee_applications EGEE to EGI Transition Meeting 3 GRNET/IASA INFN

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 Who developed and Why? Work started at the beginning of EGEE-III –Identified that we missed statistics and metrics about applications running in EGEE Developed by two NA4 teams. –Regional NA4 activity (SEE regional coordinators) –Application Porting Support Needed to satisfy two slightly different sub-goals –Track number of applications per region (task of regional teams) –Track application porting process … that’s why there are two ways to populate it: –By contacting the respective NA4 regional coordinator –Through the APS team –Manually through the APS frontend EGEE to EGI Transition Meeting 4

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 Current Status 245 applications registered so far –Asia/AP: 3 –Benelux: 7 –Central Europe: 6 –DECH: 7 –UKIF: 19 –Italy: 153 –Northern Europe: 10 –SEE: 30 Allows filtered searches and export to.csv files. Helps visitors find activities in domain of interest Keyword search on all fields EGEE to EGI Transition Meeting 5 ~ 30,000 visits during the last 16 months (~ 1M hits)

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 Issues Apparently some regional teams have been more active in populating the registry Imbalanced distribution of applications per region Double entries in some cases No distinction between –application: scientific software developed in the context of EGEE and –software tool: general purpose or domain specific software ported on gLite Main web page allows new entries only through the regional contact Limited functionality for extracting statistics EGEE to EGI Transition Meeting 6

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 Transition to EGI (1) Global task bid won by GRNET (U-E-6) –Database hosted by GRNET/IASA. –The development on the main (regional) web frontend it is almost finalized. –The development of the authorized section for adding and managing the entries (will be started on March 2010). NGI-based model instead of a regionalized one Registry clean-up (already started) Distinction between applications and tools Additional information per application (e.g. documents / scientific publications for app / people) Entry point for everything related to EGI applications –Application porting use cases library (a wiki service will be bind/dedicated to the AppDB) –Act as Scientific Gateways registry, providing all related information/links. Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 Transition to EGI (2) Placeholder for RESPECT software Revised and expanded functionality –More statistics –Export capabilities PNG/PDF/CSV for graphs XML/CSV for apps / tools / people data –Advanced queries –Scientific contacts/people statistics –Performance improvements Flexible user accounts for adding and managing entries

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 AppDB Beta Screenshots New version is under development and accessible at: http://appdb-dev.marie.hellasgrid.gr http://appdb-dev.marie.hellasgrid.gr EGEE to EGI Transition Meeting 9
10
Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 Transition Plan End of EGEE: –Database migrates from INFN to IASA –Current version freezes to last snapshot –Write-permissions no longer available from either frontends –Both frontends remain active for historical reasons with read-only capabilities. Begin of EGI-InSPIRE –AppDB beta becomes available with an egi.eu domain. –Start of registry cleanup Broadcast message to Application “owners” to create accounts in the new instance –Continue working on AppDB beta EGI-InSPIRE Q1 –AppDB goes in production –Regular maintenance and registry population starts EGEE to EGI Transition Meeting 10
11
Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 Transition Issues Regional Coordinators no longer responsible for registering new applications –Will there be NGI contacts to take over this responsibility? Also contributing in the registry cleanup. –Will the management of applications be the sole responsibility of the developers themselves? All coordinators/contacts of current applications should get an account. Should contribute in the registry cleanup. EGEE to EGI Transition Meeting 11
