Department or Division2 Aims of Presentation To demonstrate a case study that examines multi-agency working and has positive outcomes For the purpose of the presentation we have gained consent from the young person and their family to discuss this case All information is anonymous and the young person will be referred to as John

Department or Division3 Concerns Raised Around Presentation in School Self harm (marks on arm) Mood scales completed by Emotional Well-Being Worker in school which indicated low mood Referral made to central team following discussion and agreement with young person and parents SDQ and YP Core completed STAR Risk Assessment carried out

Department or Division6 Action Taken Agreement from John to speak with his parents Further assessment which highlighted: –Poor attachment relationships –Impact of parental mental health –Parental separation –High level of emotional distress –Self-harming behaviour used to manage this –Avoidant attachment pattern indicated that he couldn’t ask for support

Department or Division7 Further assessment highlighted cont.. –Peer relationships were okay but the level of support for John was minimal –Some resilience factors – coping. For example, he was getting himself into school

Department or Division8 Intervention Central team assisted school to complete a CAF and organise a Child in Need (CIN) meeting in order to formulate a co-ordinated package of support and to ensure we dealt with john’s needs sensitively The following agencies were involved in the CIN meeting where information was gathered and a plan formulated: Adult mental health School Housing Parents Young person 2 B me Adult Social Care

Department or Division9 Intervention Direct work with John’s parents which promoted their understanding of John’s needs CBT based interventions with John Practical self-esteem boosting work Regular reviews of the CAF through CIN meetings School updated the CAF regularly with all agencies, John and his family. This promoted dialogue and helped with coping strategies

Department or Division10 Outcomes and Future Work Exit strategies - some strands of work to continue Adult mental health to continue involvement with John’s father Housing to continue involvement with John’s father School based interventions Other resources: –Streetwise (16 plus provision to support children with MH difficulties) –Young Carers

Department or Division11 Contributing Factors to Success Managed within CIN framework Focussed planning Time limited 2 B Me project took a leading role Clear expectations Lead professional was identified and this was maintained in school CAF equipped people to be more confident in their role and enabled clear aims and objectives to be identified

Department or Division12 Barriers Overcame Bridging the gap between Children’s Services and Adult Services, e.g. Adult Mental Health and Housing Engagement of parents and young person Building confidence in undertaking the CAF and working within the CIN framework at level 3 CIN and Tier 2 CAMHS

Department or Division13 Current Situation No self-harming behaviour and use of more appropriate coping strategies Improvement in mood Increased confidence in own abilities Increased communication with parents Social network improved Able to articulate his feelings using lyrics and music

Department or Division14 Example John was involved in a project where he took a lead role in producing lyrics with the Black Out Crew and other young people identified in the project
