2 How do… Deaf people get attention Deaf people give feedback while listening Deaf people open conversations Deaf people interrupt Deaf people end conversations

3 Getting Attention Raise hand then start signing Touch shoulder Move into that person’s peripheral vision and touch arm

4 Give feed back while listening Repeat what was signed to you Repeat with a question Look puzzled, ask to clarify Make comments such as “TRUE”, “OH-I- SEE” etc.

5 Open a conversation WHATS-UP REMEMBER… HOW [is]….

6 Interrupt “HOLD-ON” sign (to answer a phone) Touch shoulder and sign “EXCUSE-ME” Wave at the person as they are finishing their conversation

7 End the conversation MEET LATER THANK-YOU TAKE-CARE GOOD SEE YOU I-MUST-GO

8 Reasons why a conversation is interrupted Phone ringing Someone is knocking on the door Alarms (car, fire, clock, etc.) Sound of something breaking or someone falling down Someone calling from another room Announcement on speakers Dog barking Something approaching from behind (bicycle, skateboard, vehicle, blind person or person in wheelchair)

9 Nod and/or comment Nodding Jaw dropped (shocked, surprised) “mm” (sympathetic) “ee” (agree that something is terrible) REAL/TRUE “wow” AWFUL KNOW-THAT OH-I-SEE

10 puzzled (ask for clarification or repetition) Grimace (huh?) NOT+UNDERSTAND WHAT WHY WHEN WHERE WHO WHICH AGAIN?

11 Numbers Cardinal – counting (32 books, 15 boys, etc.) Cents - money Age Clock - time Ordinal – order (first, second, third, etc.)
