Many citizens in the late 1800’s and early part of the 1900’s believed that child labor actually helped families who were poor and provided the community with need help in the factories and fields. Adolescent girls from Bibb Mfg. Co. in Macon, Georgia.

Even though many states had laws to protect children from working, these laws were often ignored. From 1908 to 1912, photographer Hine documented numerous gross violations of laws protecting young children. At many of the locations he visited, youngsters were quickly rushed out of his sight. He was also told youngsters in the mill or factory had just stopped by for a visit or were helping their mothers. Doffer boys. Macon, Georgia

One of the spinners in Whitnel Cotton Mill. She was 51 inches high and had been in the mill one year. She sometimes works at night and runs 4 sides for only 48 cents a day. When asked how old she was, she hesitated, then said, "I don't remember," then added confidentially, "I'm not old enough to work, but do just the same.“ Out of 50 employees, there were ten children about her size. The Newsies Newsies were newspaper boys who lived in large cities. Often these boys were homeless and sold papers for vey little money. They walked the streets in bitter cold weather, in the rain and in the heat.

Other questions I could research: Is child labor a problem in today in the United States or other countries? Factories needed children to work on equipment and labor in the fields. How did technology help remedy this problem?
