Short biography Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, better known as Sandro Botticelli Sandro Botticelli was an Italian painter of the early Renaissance-era. He was born in the mid-1440s in Florence, Italy.

In 1460 he began training with Fra Filippo Lippi who was one of the greatest painters of the Renaissance. In Lippi's workshop he would learn the techniques of composition and fresco painting in addition to the grinding and mixing of various paints. His first works placed great importance on the human figure rather than on space.

After 1490 Botticelli concentrated on paintings with many small figures, so that the entire picture surface seemed more alive, as if acting out a scene.
