Giving it Your All “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t … you’re right” - Henry Ford - Henry Ford

212 ° Video http://play.simpletruths.com/movie/212-the- extra-degree/ http://play.simpletruths.com/movie/212-the- extra-degree/

212 ° One Degree…Raising the temperature of water by one extra degree means the difference between something that is simply very hot and something that generates enough force to power a machine.

Reflection How many opportunities have you missed because you were not aware of the possibilities that would occur if you applied a small amount of effort beyond what you normally do?

Let 212 ° be the target for everything you do - you may not always be able to turn up the heat and hit the boiling point, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make the attempt! Let “212 ° ” be a new way of thinking- a new way of acting.

Its Time to Turn Up the Heat! A. In small groups (4-5 students) have each student identify one area in their life where they can “turn the heat up.” B. Take a few minutes as a class and ask for volunteers to share their particular focus for “turning up the heat” and how they might go about doing that.

Eric Liddell Eric Liddell was a Scottish athlete who was forced to choose between his religious beliefs and competing in an Olympic race. After refusing to run for his favorite distance, men’s 100 meters on a Sunday, Liddell competed in the men’s 400 meters at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, which he won unexpectedly.

Chariots of Fire In the movie “Chariots of Fire” there is a “true to life” scene to an event/race that happened a year before the Olympics. Early in a race, Liddell is knocked off the track by another runner, and then getting to his feet, finds himself 30 yards behind the nearest runners. With a miraculous effort, Lindell overtakes the leaders and wins the race. Many observers later commented that it was the greatest track performance they had ever seen.

Reflection Thinking back to the beginning of today’s lesson about “Giving your All” does there come a time when the price for excellence or success is too great? For example, Eric Liddell wound not compromise and compete on a Sunday; an athlete may make a decision not to take performance enhancing drugs or a student may decide never to cheat. Do you have such boundaries in your life?
