Digestive System By : Reeve and Ashu
2
The digestive system is a group of organs working together to convert food into energy and basic nutrients to feed the entire body. Its purpose is to prepare food for use by cells and organs throughout the body. Because large food particles cannot reach cells, the process of digestion breaks the food down into nutrients that can be absorbed into the bloodstream and carried to any cell in the body. Introduction...
3
Digestion and Absorption Digestion Digestion is the breakdown of large insoluble food molecules into small water-soluble food molecules so that they can be absorbed into the watery blood. There are two main functions in the digestive system, Digestion and Absorption.
4
Absorption Absorption is the process by which the nutrients in food are passed on to the blood. The majority of absorption occurs in the small intestine. After food passes through the stomach to the small intestines, it is turned into energy for the body to use.
5
The five main organs... ●Esophagus: Esophagus is organ which is located behind your throat. The esophagus receives food from your mouth and delivers food to your stomach. ●Stomach: The stomach is a hollow organ, or "container," that holds food while it is being mixed with enzymes that continue the process of breaking down food. ●Small Intestine: The small intestine is a 22-foot long muscular tube that absorbs nutrients and proteins..
6
●Large Intestine: The colon is a 6-foot long muscular tube that connects the small intestine. The large intestine absorbs water.
7
●Accessory Digestive Organs: Liver, Gallbladder, Pancreas ●Liver: Secretes bile from the gallbladder ●Gallbladder: The gallbladder makes the bile. ●Pancreas: The pancreas makes insulin which is a protein. It removes the sugar from your blood and delivers it to the cells to use it.
8
●Mouth: Is a place where food enters and goes down to digest. ●Teeth: The teeth chews and breaks the food into pieces so the food is more easily digested. ●Appendix: Stores bacteria
9
●Rectum: The rectum is the last straight section of the large intestine before reaching the anus. Carries waste to the anus where waste get’s of the body.
10
Accessory Organs and how they assist the respiratory system in its functions: ●Liver: Secretes bile from the gallbladder ●Gallbladder: The gallbladder makes the bile. ●Pancreas: The pancreas makes insulin which is a protein. It removes the sugar from your blood and delivers it to the cells to use it.
11
Digestive process ●Food enters the mouth and food is chewed by the teeth and mixed by the tongue ●Food goes down the esophagus and is delivered to your stomach where the food gets broken down by enzymes to smaller pieces. ●the pancreas makes insulin which is a protein the removes the sugar from your blood and delivers it to the cells to use it.
12
Digestive process ●Then the liver secretes bile from the gallbladder to help more digestion in the small intestines. ●The small intestine absorbs nutrients and proteins and the rest of the food goes into the large intestine where water is absorbed. ● The waste gets out of the body through the anus.
13
Interesting facts ●Hydrochloric acid, produced by the stomach, can dissolve metal although has no effect on plastic ●Estimates of how much saliva our bodies produce each day range from 1 to 3 liters ●Muscles contract and relax in the esophagus to push food down to the stomach — it works even when you’re upside down! ●It takes approximately seven seconds for food to travel through the esophagus and reach the stomach ●The approximate surface area of the small intestine is 2,700 feet; That’s over half the size of a basketball court!
