11 How to eat food Being served Refusing food Number of dishes At the end of the meal Most food is eaten with a knife and fork. You may be asked to serve yourself, or be served by your host. Politely say you can’t eat or don’t want any more. Fewer dishes are offered than in China. People stay and talk around the table; it’s rude to leave as soon as the meal is over.

12 You should eat with a knife and fork unless it is finger food. You don’t say anything. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions. ① “And when you eat western food, do as the Westerners do.” So how should you eat? ② “But there’s no similar expression in English.” So what do you say in English?

13 ④ “It isn’t thought to be so important to offer too much food.” What does this suggest about meals in China? That Chinese people think it is important to offer lots of food. ③ “I’m sorry, I can’t eat this.” When might you want to say this? If I’ve been given something I don’t like.

14 ⑤ “Finally, it’s sometimes difficult to know when the meal is over.” How do we know that a meal is over in China? What might be different in western meal? In China a meal is over as soon as people have finished eating. In the West, people might sit around the table after they’ve finished eating.
