Subscript – A number written to the lower right of a symbol showing the number of atoms in a molecule or compound. Oxidation (valence) Number – The number of electrons an atom lends, borrows, or shares.

Writing Formulas Write the name of the compound.
Write symbols for the parts of the name. Write oxidation numbers of each symbol above the symbol. Criss-cross oxidation numbers, reduce and write the formula.
