Educational Background -Raised in Paris by his mother, a math teacher -Introduced to classical literature by grandfather -Attended Cours Hattemer, a Parisian private school -Obtained a Philosophy degree at École Normale Supérieure, a French academy École Normale Supérieure

Spiritual Beliefs and POV -Atheist- the world has no creator, because if there was then humans would have to have essence (“paper cutter” example) -Marxist (the focus that the working class is being oppressed)

Existential/Aesthetic Beliefs -Believes that all humans are condemned to freedom -Homosexuality to Sartre wasn’t viewed as wrong or abnormal, he believed they were free to express themselves however deemed by themselves.

Existential/Aesthetic Beliefs -Believed Individuality and other auspects are not learned but earned. -Believed there is no creator or watcher over humanity that were left to our own devices to make our own life and destiny.

Other Philosopher’s Influence -At the French Institute in Berlin, Sartre studied many influential philosophers. -Focuses less on the ideology of determining the meaning of something deemed by man and more on the fluidity of this theory.

Other Philosopher’s Influence -Sartre believed that there is no internal structure to imagination, saying that whenever one is told of something that doesn’t exists (i.e. a heffalump) one intentionally directs their thought to something of existence (such as the connection between a heffalump and an elephant)

Other Philosopher’s Influence -Used Husserl’s theory of intentionality, conception of self, and the history of eidetics analysis, which is studying how one determines if something has meaning. -Created the “Husserlian” theory, consciousness lacks depth,therefore transparent.

Other Philosopher’s Influence -He was influenced by Immanuel Kant concerning fundamental ideas about freedom. Sartre decided that morals diverge from choice, which we have the freedom to do. -Influenced by Franz Adler’s ideology, believing that man is not predestined, that every action performed is out of circumstance
