Participants will understand how reading, writing, and background knowledge can be improved through the integration of knowledge of words and the world using social studies content by exploring the essential question: How can teachers use social studies materials and instruction to support the CCSS? Today’s Session Goals and Purpose NNCSS 2016

I.Make direct links between the ELA shifts and the standards with instructional practices and materials in social studies II.Engage in guided practice opportunities to showcase the instructional moves and student learning involved in a DBQ Agenda NNCSS 2016

A growth mindset isn’t just about effort. Perhaps the most common misconception is simply equating the growth mindset with effort. Certainly, effort is key for students’ achievement, but it’s not the only thing. Students need to try new strategies and seek input from others when they’re stuck. They need this repertoire of approaches—not just sheer effort—to learn and improve. NNCSS 2016

Shifts of Instruction and Social Studies Focus Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction and informational texts Regular practice with complex text and its academic vocabulary Close Reading with Text Dependent Questions Argumentative Writing Reading and writing grounded in evidence from text Document Based Questions Research Based Discussion Methods NNCSS 2016

All students (even primary grades) can do Document Based Questions (DBQs). If AP students can do this work, and other students even in upper elementary can do this work, why not primary students? DBQs Across Grade Levels NNCSS 2016

Inspired by the work of a Title 1 District in Atlanta, Georgia Starting with Core Knowledge Domains in order to collect data from multiple sites using the same DBQs WCSD teacher created materials (with guidance from C&I) Can be used for any content literacy unit To build historical thinking and literacy skills so that students have the appropriate skills in later grades Building more DBQs in the coming months Living and changing resources DBQs for Grades K-3 NNCSS 2016
