New Territories cause Conflict The territories gained from Mexico after the Mexican- American War caused conflict over the issue of slavery. Would the new territories be slave or free states? The nation divided between the North and South.

Compromise of 1850 The bill had several parts: Texas gave up all claims to NM California became a free state No slavery restrictions in Utah or New Mexico: the state would decide when they became a state No slavery in Washington D.C. Fugitive Slave Laws This compromise only temporarily solved the issue.
