April Fool’s Day Grade: 4’th Level: beginners Topic: Special Days Lesson title: April Fool’s Day
3
I chose three different types of activities, in order to teach vocabulary related to April fool’s day: 1.) General discussion based on realia; ( frontal activity) 2.) Word Hunter - crossword regarding pranks, tricks, imagination and some other words related to the spring season; ( individual activity) 3.) “Making – up my own prank!” (group activity)
4
First activity T: Let’s remember together the last 1’st of April. What kind of a day is this, is it a special day, a holiday? How do we use to celebrate it? Why it is called the Fool’s day? How did you spend April Fool’s day this year? How would you describe this holiday?
5
Second activity Ss. are given a crossword that contains the following words: April, games, funny, prank, joke, butterfly, spring, laugh, imagination, surprise, tricks, joy, childish, flower, sun. There are fifteen words that Ss. have to find in a given time (5’); the activity will be organized as a competition and the Ss. who find all the words will come to the board and write them down. All the unknown words will be explained, if necessary.
7
Final activity This is a more complex activity because it has two parts; Reading: Ss. are given a worksheet with a text about how April Fool’s Day is celebrated in the U.S.A; the main task is to identify precise information from the text and apply it in the group activity that follows; Group activity: based on the rules given by the text, Ss. arranged in groups of four will make – up their own pranks; at the end of activity, each group will present it’s prank.
9
Extra activity: What colour socks do bear wear? They don’t wear sock, they have bear feet / bare feet. What do you call bears with no ears? “B”. What’s orange and sound like a parrot? A carrot. What occurs twice in a week, once in a year but never in a day? The letter “E”.
10
Objectives: To identify the meaning of April Fool’s day. To list words related to the topic of the lesson. To recognize some given rules from a text. To design an original prank/joke.
11
Techniques: 1.) Realia: using a real fact, T. builds – up a discussion about the topic, introducing and getting Ss. familiarizing with 1’st of April related vocabulary. 2.) Game: the crossword is a funny and competitive way of learning new words or even to remember them. 3.) Group – work: this activity can be seen as a mean of reinforcement, because Ss. have to use the new vocabulary in order to make – up a joke and also to introduce the new words in their own syntactical structures.
