5 Credit by Demonstrated Mastery The North Carolina State Board of Education has created a policy (GCS-M-001.8) where middle and high school students may earn course credit for high school level courses without requiring specific seat time. This policy specifically offers NC students the opportunity to personalize and accelerate their learning by earning course credit through a demonstration of mastery of course material. The State Board of Education defines “mastery” as a student’s command of course material at a level that demonstrates a deep understanding of the content standards and the ability to apply his or her knowledge of the material. It is the process by which a school shall, based upon a body of evidence, award a student credit in a particular course without requiring the student to complete classroom instruction for a certain

Metrolina Regional Scholars Academy students requesting to implement this policy shall demonstrate mastery through a multi-phase assessment, consisting of: Phase I: Student completes a standard examination of the assessment required for the course to demonstrate foundational knowledge. Examinations shall include, End-of-Course (EOC) demonstrate foundational knowledge. Examinations shall include, End-of-Course (EOC) Re-testing is not permitted. Phase II: Student completes an artifact development process that requires to demonstrate deep understanding and application of course content. Credit by Demonstrated Mastery will only be available for high school courses in which the school offers more advanced coursework for the student to take after successful completion of the process.

9 Students enrolled in High School courses (Math I, Math II, Math III, English I, Biology) will receive a percentage grade each quarter in addition to the 1-4 ratings. The percentage grade is determined using the following process: 1. A rating scale score is determined based on the 1-4 ratings for each category on the report card. The rating scale score is a weighted grade of the following percentages: Academic Performance – 60%, Homework – 20%, Effort – 10%, Behavior – 10%. High School Credit

10 2. Next the raw score is converted to a percentage grade according to the scale below: –1.0 – 1.99 65% (D) –2.0 - 2.24 75% (C) –2.25 – 2.49 80% (B-) –2.5 - 2.74 85% (B) –2.75- 2.99 90% (A-) –3.0 – 3.49 95% (A) –3.5 – 4.0 100% (A+) High School Credit (con’t)

11 3. At the end of the high school course, students will take either an End of Course Exam, North Carolina Final Exam, or a teacher created Final Exam. This exam will count as 25% of the final grade. 4. The final grade will be found using the formula: Average of the four quarter percentage grades * 75% + Final Exam Grade * 25% 5. Students that have a final grade below 70% will not receive high school credit for the course and will be required to repeat the course. High School Credit (con’t)
