In all three videos, Matt and the people surrounding him looked like they were having a good time, which was good to see—especially in countries I don’t associate with the idea of fun. 12 CULTURE Question #1 In his graphic novel American Born Chinese, author Gene Yang uses his fictional protagonist Jin to represent how an Asian American might feel about his cultural heritage. In rejecting his culture when he insists his new friend WeiChen “speak English” rather than acknowledge the Mandarin Chinese language being spoken by the newcomer (37), Jin (Yang) shows how language can be a barrier to being accepted by a wider group.
