Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle The beetle has a brownish red shell with a black head and upper body. It’s approximately 2.5 cm long. It has two long antae and has a set of wings under shell. They feed on spruce trees and have recently left there homeland in Europe and has invaded North America, more specifically Nova Scotia, Canada.

Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle The beetle made its way here from Europe inside wood that was shipped over seas sometime in the late 1980’s. It’s made it’s stand in Point Pleasant park, Nova Scotia. Unlike it’s feeding habits in Europe were the beetle favoured dead or dying tree’s. The beetles in Nova Scotia are attacking live ones. Destroying tree by tree. There is no known effective chemical to defend against this infestation but officials are debating killing 10 000 various spruce trees to prevent breeding among the beetles. This would have a dramatic effect on one of the more beautiful parks in Halifax.

Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle The park was rich in beautiful trees and the beetle is slowly tearing it down, one by one. The only way to get rid of them is a drastic one, but maybe a needed one. Could it eventually happen anyway? Could the beetles spread to other locations? One things for sure, the Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle needs to go.
