3
5 THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY
4
Theme 1: Location Relative Location Absolute Location
5
Relative Location Relative location describes a place or area by comparing it to another place or area. Examples: –Rome is located near the Mediterranean Sea. –Argentina is near Brazil. –Ecuador is south of Mexico. –Lincoln is 50 miles from Omaha. –Denham Springs is near the Amite River.
6
Absolute Location Absolute location gives an exact location of the place. –It often has an exact address or coordinate (latitude and longitude) Examples: –Rome is located at 41 N, 12 E –Argentina is located in the southern hemisphere –Ecuador is located in Tropic of Cancer. –Disney World is located in Orlando, FL.
8
LATITUDE Latitude: –Is the MEASURE of how far North & South a location is from the Equator –Lines RUN ACROSS the world from East to West Equator: –Line of latitude at 0°. –an imaginary line of latitude that lies halfway between the North & South poles and circles the globe N S 0º 10° N 0° 10° S
9
LONGITUDE Longitude: –Is the MEASURE of how far East or West a location is from the Prime Meridian –Lines RUN DOWN the world from North to South. Prime Meridian: –Line of longitude at 0°. –the imaginary line of longitude that runs through Greenwich, England from the North Pole to the South Pole 0º EW 10° W 0° 10° E
10
When lines of latitude and longitude are overlaid on each other, they form a ??? Grid 0º 10° W10° E 10° N 10° S
12
Compass Rose Shows direction There are 4 cardinal directions »North »South »East »West N S EW
13
Theme 2: PLACE Refers to the physical and human features found on our Earth.
14
Place – Physical Characteristics Naturally made for the Earth – here before humans Land Features – trees, grass, desert Mountains, plains, and plateaus Climate Bodies of Water
15
What are some physical characteristics of our Parish??? Amite River Tickfaw River Forest Lake Maurepas Humid Subtropical Climate
16
Place – Human Characteristics Created by humans, not naturally created by the Earth People Culture Language Religion Buildings and Landmarks Cities Political boundaries
17
What are some human characteristics of our Parish?? Cities – Denham Springs, Walker, etc. Buildings Stores – Sam’s, Bass Pro, Wal-Mart Antique Village Subdivisions Street Signs “Cajun Culture”
18
Theme 3: Human Environment Interaction How people (mankind) use and depend (interact) with their Environment People... Adapt to Their Environment Modify Their Environment Depend on Their Environment
19
People ADAPT to their Environment Example: * People who live in the desert wrap their heads with material to keep the hot sun and sand out of their faces * People watch the Weather on TV to see what type of clothing to wear
20
People CHANGE/MODIFY their Environment Example: * The developer of a shopping mall chooses to bulldoze the land to level it for buildings and parking lots * Turning on the air conditioning or heater
21
We DEPEND on our environment -- to provide food for us to eat -- to provide drinking water -- to provide building supplies -- for everyday needs We modify our environment
22
Theme 4: Movement This theme refers to the transportation of an object from one place to another. The Mobility (movement) of People Goods Ideas Movement is how certain places are linked to one another and the world.
23
MOVEMENT How are people, goods, and ideas moved from place to place? How are people, goods, and ideas moved from place to place? –Human Movement Trucks, Trains, PlanesTrucks, Trains, Planes –Information Movement Phones, computer (email), mailPhones, computer (email), mail –Idea Movement How do fads/trends move from place to place? How do fads/trends move from place to place? TV, Radio, Magazines
24
Ideas Ideas originate in humans but are spread through a system of movement called communication. There are many ways in which ideas are spread.
25
How would movement of a large group of people affect a place? Living Food Space Jobs
26
Theme 5: REGION A region is an area defined by common characteristics 3 Types: 1. Physical 2. Political 3. Cultural
27
Physical Region Common landscape and landforms that make a location unique Common climate and vegetation
28
Political Region Countries banned together for economic or political reasons Similar governments and economics Similar laws and rules
29
Cultural Regions Similar * religions * language * lifestyles
30
Physical Regions “Biomes” Grasslands Tundra Rainforest Mountains Deserts What kind of Biome do you live in?
31
Regions of the US
33
To sum it all up….. You will be responsible for KNOWING the 5 themes. That is by listing and applying them!!!! Here is a review and an easy way to remember them! Hope it helps!
