November 12-13, 2007 Super-B Factory: Accelerator Costing, PEP-II Hardware and Schedule J. Seeman SLAC International Review Committee meeting November 12-13, 2007

Topics Accelerator Cost –Methodology –Listed activities PEP-II Components –Types of items –Availability Construction Schedule –Planning

November 12-13, 2007 Tor Vergata Site (from F. Forti)

November 12-13, 2007 Ring Layout (from F. Forti) SuperB Ring (about 1800m) SPARX Roman Villa 100m SuperB Injector (about 400m) SuperB Main Building

November 12-13, 2007 Super-B Parameters

November 12-13, 2007 Accelerator status SBF accelerator layout has converged and been defined. Site constraints suggest 1650 m + polarization component length for a total of 1800 m. A luminosity of 1x10 36 with longitudinal polarization of one beam at the interaction point is the primary goal. Overall parameters have a x4 luminosity growth potential to the 4x10 36 level. Many of the systems use existing components or component designs. Interaction region has new features. Most of the future design work will be concentrated there.

November 12-13, 2007 Costing Methodology Identified all needed accelerator components. Bottoms up cost evaluation from existing designs for new components. Scaled costs of shipping components from PEP-II accelerator from present experience. Reuse and refurbishment costs escalated from construction costs in 1995 to 2007 Euros. Detailed work breakdown structure used. The cost estimate for the Conceptual Design Report CDR has not yet received a level of scrutiny needed for the Technical Design Report TDR.

November 12-13, 2007 Cost Breakdown Items EDIA –Engineering, Design, Inspection, Acceptance Labor –Person hours which could (likely) be done at an existing laboratory M&S –Work and parts that could be purchased from industry or a laboratory as needed. Replacement value: Reuse/Refurbishment –Replacement costs of PEP-II components if built in 2007

November 12-13, 2007 “Accelerator Components” Project management Magnets –(dipoles, quadrupoles, sextupoles, kickers) Mechanical supports Interaction region Water systems Vacuum systems RF system (klystron, cavities, waveguide, controls) Controls and instrumentation Polarization manipulation Injection –(source, linac, damping rings, septa, injection lines)

November 12-13, 2007 Polarization Components in the Estimate The following items are included in the Super-B cost estimate: –Polarization magnets in the IR –Polarization vacuum chambers –Polarization diagnostics –Injector polarization manipulation hardware –Refurbished polarized gun from SLAC The total effort is about: –Labor = 140 man-months –New M&S = 5 MEuros –Replacement value of reused parts = 2 MEuros

November 12-13, 2007 Savings for Ring Size Reduction from 2250m (CDR) to 1800 m (Tor Vergata site) Costs are lower with reduce ring sizes. Costs do not scale directly as the ring “Arcs” are the same length, just the straight sections are shorter and fewer. Injector is the same cost. Power related costs are the same as the power remains roughly the same. Initial look at cost savings for accelerator and site/utilities: –Labor: -400 man months –M&S: -35 MEuros –Replacement : -3 MEuros

November 12-13, 2007 Available Components from the PEP-II B Factory at SLAC Located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center

November 12-13, 2007 PEP-II injection system in Linac Linac LER injection line HER Injection Line

November 12-13, 2007 Availability of PEP-II Components PEP-II will shut down September 2008. Many of the parts will be available for other projects. SLAC staff is in the middle of a study for long range science projects (~20 years). There are several future possibilities for PEP-II components and tunnel: –Contribute components to Super-B. –Install new LCLS undulator in the PEP-II tunnel. –Make a moderate ring light source (use one ring only-HER). –Make a state-of-the-art light source (one ring with mostly new parts). No decisions on light sources will be made soon.

November 12-13, 2007 Schedule Inputs (CDR) for Super-B Accelerator Included calendar time to: Do initial engineering. Prepare site, bore tunnels, build buildings. Ship components from SLAC to Italy. Install components for two rings. Construction time for injector. Commission the injector and two rings. Both KEKB and PEP-II were built in 4 years. SBF schedule came in at about five years with the new tunnel and injector.

November 12-13, 2007 SBF CDR Schedule of events

November 12-13, 2007 Condensed Summary of Yearly Activities Year 0: –Agency work –Engineering –Environmental studies Year 1: –Start boring tunnels –Start erecting buildings –Start building IR hall –Refurbish components –Start constructing new accelerator components Year 2: –Finish over half of civil construction –Construct new components –Ship refurbished components –Buy power supplies and controls Year 3: –Ship refurbished components –Finish constructing parts –Start installation Year 4: –Finish installation –Start and finish linac commissioning –Start commissioning rings

November 12-13, 2007 Conclusions Super-B Accelerator layout has been defined and an initial cost estimate made. –All components have been included. Accelerator costs have been estimated using past experience. –Escalation (then year costs) and contingency have not been added. A reasonable schedule has been made which is consistent with the construction times of PEP-II and KEKB.
