1
The Italian flavor factory reloaded The outcome of the “Fioni review”, the Ministry reaction and the SuperB INFN withdrawal The tau Charm option The current Cabibbo Lab activities Open questions for the workshop
2
The Cabibbo Lab finance committe Fioni (CEA, France) (Chair) Dormy ( research ministery, France) Womersley (STFC, UK) Brinkmann (XFEL, Desy) Iacopini ( head of INFN Scientific-Technical commitee)
3
SuperB Final cost estimates The rough final cost partition (Meuros) – 530 the “bare” accelerator – 100 VAT – 100 Personnel – 80 SLAC donation (maximum reuse) – 140 ML risks and spares Unavoidable sum at least of the order of 650
4
Conclusions to the finance committee The bare costing made for a Superb-like accelerator is off by more than a factor two with respect to the assigned financial support ad by 30% with respect to the requested one. SuperB is on the critical path to meet its challenging planning Manpower from INFN is a crucial issue Without a clear indication on a possible economic path from MIUR the project is at risk
5
from the report of the Finance Review Committee The committee wishes to underline the high quality of the work that was presented, especially considering the very limited manpower and resources allocated to a project of this size. The WBS (work breakdown structure) approach of assessing the cost is systematic and carried out at a level sufficient to assure >90% completeness.
6
From the report of the head of the SuperB MAC ( C. Pellegrini) To summarize, the Super B team has made an excellent work at reevaluating and improving the Super B design, maximizing its high energy physics exploration range, fitting it into the chosen site and defining the work that remains to be done to complete engineering level design and the manpower needed to do. Given the additional resources needed the Super B project can be finalized in a timely manner
7
The transition After INFN withdrawal due to the absence of a complete financial path for SuperB construction, the Cabibbo Lab associates (INFN and University of Roma Tor Vergata) have charged the consortium of exploring the feasibility of an optimised tau charm flavor factory
8
The tau charm option This option is strongly based on the know how developed for superB – Accelerator scheme – Physics motivations – Interdisciplinary running mode Runs at charm threshold were part of the original SuperB scientific program This option may match the original flagship project allocation ( 250MEuros)
9
Accelerator scheme Low currents and crab waist solution for the interaction region Small emittance and high luminosity A symmetric machine Polarization available on one beam Compact dimensions (about 320 Meters for the rings) Competitive luminosity also at low energy (say 1 GeV)
10
Physics case Flavor physics tied to the second and third ( lepton) generation – General parametrisation of SU(2)XU(1) invariant dimension 6 operators involves about 18 possibilities – Lepton and baryon number violating effects are described by 6 (dimension 6) operators – Existing constraints restrict their possible size (or equivalently increase the value of the new hidden energy scale)

A golden case Taumu gamma

LFV from → E in ISR background is lower than E for when the machine is operated at Ecm =4.2 GeV. It has been well simulated in the study for SuperCTau at BINP E (CMS) from and ISR( ) (4s) maximum nb H.Hayahii 2008 12M.A.Giorgi
13
LFV from → The favorable Kinematical condition and the use of polarization can allow an UL(SuperB near Threshold in 1-2 years) ≤ UL (SuperB@Y(4s) in 5-6 years).. It will take 12-15 years to SuperBELLE). 13M.A.Giorgi

Undulators Injecto r 600 MeV C-Band Magn Comp Advanced Exp Undulators The interdisciplinary mode: hard X-ray FEL with the Tau_Charm linac The costing for the X-FEL extra accelerator components is of the order of a few tens of ME compared to the few hundreds of a similar ad hoc facility NOTE: additional space is available for tau charm and there is no damping ring for electrons

24
Cabibbo Lab these days The general organization has been frozen ( directorate and departments) The University positive deliberation on the site has been frozen Three study groups have been formed, roughly made by ten to fifteen people each for a good fraction of their time: – Theory – Detector – Accelerator
25
More details on accelerator Cabibbo Lab fix terms contracts (14) prepare to make zeroth order engineering designs. P. Raimondi is officially collaborating with the LNF core team ( Biagini, Boscolo, Guiducci) and with E. Paoloni on the final focus. C. Sanelli is implementing the porting of cost estimates for SuperB and making the first new magnets schemes. Many departments group leaders from LNF may reenter the work at the proper costing time, some do now. South INFN Lab (LNS) continues his support to the project.

questions to the workshop Accelerator – Is a symmetric machine a strong limitation? – Is the polarisation still an asset? – Is the quoted luminosity value confortable? – Are there unsolved issues that require some R&D? – Is the coexistence with an X-FEL operation mode pacific? – Is the luminosity at low energy competitive?
30
physics Are there unique discovery physics cases? How compare possible bounds on NP with competing experiments? Is there an ideal window of opportunity? What is the progress achievable on “standard measurements” for example in charm decays and charmonium states?
31
Decision path A new Minister arrived and will reconsider the National Research Plan The project was recently audited by a committee as a re-modulation of the original SuperB INFN is considering alternatives There is a widespread bad feeling in getting flagship projects funded within the ordinary yearly budget (compression)
32
Decision path In such an uncertain environment the project should little count on previous approval steps, in spite of the reasonable matching with promised funds. The project should assess its strong value and deserve a fresh approval not just as a back up solution of SuperB
