WHAT MAKES A GOOD SOURCE? Database sources are best.edu,.gov,.org sites are best for most of your topics but always evaluate them carefully-college students often publish their work under the.edu domain name. Who sponsors the site? Investigate this! Are the links working? Are they sales pitches? Look at the date the source was published-look for the most current or recent date you can get.
5
WHAT IS “IMPORTANT INFORMATION”? Important names, dates, or events. Unique wording or phrases that you like that make the topic comprehensible to your audience. Interesting quotes that would make your presentation/paper clearer or more interesting and informative. Significant details that illustrate a key aspect of your topic.
7
THIS MEANS SUMMARIZING, PARAPHRASING AND QUOTING! Summarize: when the main ideas or claims are important, but the details and statistics are not. Include all of the main points of the text in your summary. **The source sheet asks for a 3-sentence summary.**
9
PARAPHRASING Paraphrase when the original details or statistics are important, but the remaining text is wordy, lengthy, or unnecessary. Put the information in your own words- don’t copy the sentence structure or diction of the author. **The source sheet asks for 3-5 paraphrases.**
10
SAMPLE PARAPHRASE: Although times were hard, women often had an easier time finding work than men did. They worked as nannies, seamstresses, and landscapers. Helping support their families gave them more independence and power, both within their families and marriages, and out in the workplace (“Women, the WPA, and the Great Depression”).
11
QUOTING Quote when the original text is particularly well-phrased, especially pertinent, or unique. Use the EXACT WORDS from the text and put quotation marks around them. **The source sheet asks for 2 direct quotes.**
12
SAMPLE QUOTE: “The Great Depression dramatically affected the American family. Many men found themselves out of work, and many married women, eager to support their families, worked outside the home for the first time” (“Women, the WPA, and the Great Depression”).
