USING MLA TO CITE POETRY PLUS MICROTHEME FORMAT!

1.Refer to Neruda’s sonnets. Take one thing you highlighted or annotated and give an example of how it could be quoted in a sentence (be sure to include an in-text citation).

■Choose 2 of the 4 sonnets we analyzed in class/for homework ■Write an essay in microtheme format comparing/contrasting the themes of your two chosen sonnets ■Include direct quotations from the sonnets, in-text citations, and a work cited page ■12 point font, Times New Roman, double-spaced, proper heading. ■Typed Rough Draft due in hard copy Tuesday, Jan. 19 th ■Final Draft Submitted to turnitin.com by Thursday, Jan. 21 st at 11:59pm ■Final Draft due in hard copy Friday, Jan. 22 nd in class ■What I am looking for: you use your insights and inferences to thoughtfully compare/contrast the development of theme in two of Neruda’s sonnets and you use MLA citation properly!

Microtheme “Essay” ■This is a ONE paragraph essay ■Sentence 1: THESIS ■Sentences 2-10 (“Body”): First Point>Evidence>Analysis/Commentary> Second Point>Evidence>Analysis/Commentary> Third Point>Evidence>Analysis/Commentary ■Sentence 11: CONCLUSION

Thesis ■Introduces the author’s name, the names of the poems, and compares/contrasts the poems’ themes

Example Thesis ■Thesis Contrasting Differences: In “Dreams” Langston Hughes uses metaphor to imply that without dreams life would be bleak and hopeless, while in “Dream Deferred” he uses imagery to convey that once you give up on a dream it becomes irretrievable. ■Thesis Comparing Similarities: In both “Dreams” and “Dream Deferred” Langston Hughes conveys the hopelessness of dreams forgotten and dreams that are postponed.

First, Second, and Third Point ■A point that supports your thesis ■Similar to how a topic sentence would function in a full essay ■Relates back to your thesis, but may only refer to one piece of it

Evidence ■Cites specific detail from the poem ■Must be a direct quote ■Must be cited in MLA format (in-text citation) ■Must help “prove your point” (no random/ unrelated quotes)

Analysis/Commentary ■Explains what the quote means (is it a metaphor? simile? what is the author trying to say?) AND/OR ■Comments thoughtfully on how the evidence contributes to the sonnet’s theme and your overall thesis.

Conclusion ■Concludes by reflecting insightfully upon the differences/similarities between the poems’ themes and how Neruda developed the themes.

Work Cited—Refer to bottom of sonnet handout for an example of how the work cited entry should look. You may put your work cited on the same page as your microtheme essay if there is room.
