Learning Objectives and Vocab. Learning Objective #2: I can compare and order rational numbers. ○ Standard: found in grade 6 CCSS Vocabulary: Rational numbers Common denominator Least common denominator (LCD)
5
Rational Numbers A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a ratio of two integers. Examples: Fractions, terminating decimals, repeating decimals, percents, and integers are all rational numbers.
6
Compare and Order What does it mean to compare numbers? What symbols are used to compare? What does it mean to order a set of numbers?
7
Comparing/Ordering Fractions Can we compare 3/7 and 5/12? When comparing and ordering fractions we need to have common denominators. You can use the least common denominator, or LCD, which is the least common multiple of the denominators. After finding a common denominator, we need to make equivalent fractions.

You can also turn fractions into decimals and compare decimals…

Rational Numbers Are all numbers rational numbers? Nonterminating, nonrepeating decimals are called irrational numbers. ○ En example of an irrational number is pi,, which is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. ○ pi = 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419 7169399375105820974944592307816406286208 99862803482534211706798214808651…
