4 Council Briefing Slide 4 Definitions A 100-year storm (either tidal or rainfall): Has a probability of occurring once every 100 years 1% chance of happening in any given year Since these are probabilities, more than one 100-year storm can occur during any given period of time 10-year storm – used as design standard for sizing storm drain pipes because it more frequently occurs 100-year flood plain is the area adjoining a river, stream or watercourse covered by water in the event of a 100-year flood
