A2 Media ARMED WITH LOVE ADVANCED PORTFOLIO EVALUATION BY: Dianah Amadi

What is the criteria for our advanced portfolio? Our media group of four were asked to provide: A Film Poster A magazine front cover And a trailer All the ancillary were to be supporting to our genre of; Gangster crime

The Products… PosterMagazine front cover

The product Trailer

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? TRAILER Comparing our media product; Trailer to that of the film American gangster was interesting in comparing the totally different story lines. The story line of drugs and illegal activity is the catalyst and downfall of the primary gangster in American gangster and other gangster crime films but not in ours we dribble both violence and love on the same court in our trailer storyline. The conventions we use in our trailer is very clear, mise-en-scene of suit and tie hitmen, a gun and violent behaviour is the convention of a gangster crime movie and we understood these were important in highlighting our trailer as a gangster crime genre. An overall supreme gangster is also needed in showing overall dominance and the idea ‘I mean business’ Gangster crime trailers also show their characters with their main leader as an untouchable character, where he is rich and classy and we stuck to this convention starting the trailer of cool and mellow with a little background information on main character.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? In a sort of backwards way I still followed colour conventions of black and white colour coding for my poster. Also there are two images in both posters this is one of the conventions I decided to stick to. Although the title is at the bottom not in the middle it is still at a very eye catching position. Although on the American Gangster poster there are two character facing the camera square on it is hard to see their face and this is one of the decisions I have chosen to acquire I wanted my character facing away from the camera to create that element of mystery. Poster

Personal Input While working on the creation of the trailer I found looking at the initial story board of the trailer, it didn’t really go well, when editing. So I deviated from it to create a more visual theatrical effect such as the long walk of main character with a voice over of him that came in effectively.

What have you learned from your audience feedback? My audience feedback has identified both good and bad things from my overall ancillary and they are; The fact that my overall magazine has a woman in front is a convention that might be confusing to people or that they were able to tell that it was about a relationship straight away seeing a woman in the front cover. However my more positive feedbacks explained how they felt the voice over at the beginning of the trailer was classic, and it gave insight into the character that they were watching. They also mentioned how the anxiety to watch the film was immense because they were drawn to the physicality of the trailer.

What Media Technology and software did you use? My group and I used… A camera A Computer Tripod Software Adobe photoshop Adobe premier 1.5 Internet Microsoft office/power point

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? RESEARCH: the internet allowed us to carry out secondary research into existing films from the gangster crime genre, the highest grossing film, the most popular, iconography. More importantly with the internet we were able to view existing trailers, see film magazines and film posters to comprehend what are the expected conventions. The information we gathered we were able to set them out presentably unto Microsoft PowerPoint, Publisher and Word document formats. PLANNING: With the aid of Microsoft Publisher were able to easily manipulate the arrangements of our ancillary tasks without ruining our total composition before placing them unto Photoshop/ photo editor. Before taking our official photos to be used in our ancillary texts we first of all experimented with the camera by taking pictures of different settings and random objects from alternative angles and lightings by doing this we were able to become familiar with the camera settings and also we were able to trial different styles of photography so we could get an idea of what we wanted to feature in our final production. Storyboard and sketches also help in planning. CONSTRUCTION: With Photoshop/ photo editor we could edit our images and fonts on our posters and magazines while the camera we were able to take the pictures in the first place. EVALUATION: For my evaluation I am using power point with a voice over recording to explain to you how I came to create a good poster, magazine cover and trailer for my initial idea of a Gangster crime genre.
