9 World War Two as a Moral War World War Two is widely considered to be one of the most morally unambiguous conflicts in history. Yet the morality of World War Two might not be as morally black and white as is commonly perceived...

10 World War Two, Total War, and Moral Ambiguity… The moral ambiguity of World War Two is seen when World War Two is examined through the lens of total war. What is total war?

11 World War Two, Total War, and Moral Ambiguity World War Two extended and redefined the notion of Total War. –World War One: Civilians were incorporated into the war to provide home front support or as collateral damage in military objectives. Important, but indirect –World War Two: Civilians were incorporated into the war in a direct and totalizing way: as military targets, as perpetrators of violence, as domestic enemies, as military intelligence, as prisoners, as refugees, as workers, etc. Central and direct

12 World War Two, Total War, and Moral Ambiguity The direct role that civilians played in World War Two blurred the line between civilians and combatants for all countries involved in the war. It is the blurring of this line, that leads to the blurring of the moral line in World War Two.
