Refrain from “trying too hard” to obtain a sense of belonging as this can result in harmful behaviors: Gangs, risks behaviors, sexual activity, etc. Practice Abstinence- deliberate decision to avoid harmful behaviors

Personality & Environment Family, friends, neighborhood, school, home Naturally engage in MODELING- observing & learning from the behaviors of those around you

Limiting risk behaviors and practicing abstinence will help prevent certain diseases People who are able to cope with stresses are less susceptible to illnesses such as colds and other upper- respiratory infections. Promoting mental & emotional health will prevent disease and strengthen all sides of your health triangle.

Definition; the building blocks of development that help young people grow up as healthy, caring, and responsible individuals. Support – who and where do you find support? Empowerment – what gives you empowerment? Boundaries and Expectations – who sets these for you? Constructive Use of Time – what do you do in your free time? Commitment to Learning- what do you do to learn outside of school? Positive Values – what are some of your values, beliefs, morals? Social Competencies – do have any of these listed on pg 179? How did you develop them? Positive Identity – how is your self esteem? Do you have a positive outlook on life?

Constructive criticism; nonhostile comments that point our problems and encourage improvement. E. What is your self talk like? Positive or negative? Replace negative self talk with positive self talk; give your neighbor an example of this.

Palmer Ridge Physical Education Department 29 II. Strategies for responding to Emotions A. What am I reacting to? Does the intensity of my emotion match the situation? B. Will this matter tomorrow? Next week? Next year? C. Consider all possible consequences before reacting strongly. D. Use positive feeling to inspire! Relieve negative feeling by engaging in physical activity or talking w/ a trusted friend. E. If a negative feeling doesn’t go away, seek help from a parent, trusted adult, professional.

When things are upsetting: Take slow, deep breaths Get away from the situation to compose yourself Analyze contributing factors to situation Write in a journal, play music Talk with a trusted friend

Talk about your fear with someone you trust. Some fear is natural. Only when it is irrational & uncontrollable is it a problem.
