What is the definition of health? What are the different aspects of health? How do you measure health?

Health refers to the overall well-being of your body (physical, mental, social, and spiritual). Health can be measured by various factors

Life Expectancy: The number of years a person can expect to live Life expectancy has been improving, but now it seems to be reversing (since 2000…why?) Quality of life: The degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life Difference between a healthy person at 70 and one that has many medical problems

Physical Health: how well your body functions, carry out every day tasks, exercise, sleep Mental and Emotional health: Is your mind alert? Do you learn from your mistakes? Are your emotions proper responses to events, do you relax, share feelings? Social Health: How well you get along with others. Relationships, family, friends, communicating, caring about others

A continuum is a gradual progression through many stages between one extreme and another Wellness is a state of high level health Illness is a state of low level health The choices you make on a daily basis affect your position on the health continuum

Many of the choices you make daily affect your position on the health continuum. Decisions are based upon your values. What is important to you?

Draw, or cut out a picture, of five different ways to stay healthy and put them on your folder (you may use the front and the back) Describe each behavior (example: running, getting plenty of rest, having friends) Relate each behavior to it’s corresponding aspect of health (physical, mental/emotional, or social) 20 points (3 points for each picture, 5 points for creativity/neatness)
