10/28/15 and 10/29/15 1.Activity 7.1 2.Reading 7.1 3.Photosynthesis Relay Race HOMEWORK: Have a Spooky Weekend!!!
2
Activity 7.1 Log into Google Classroom
3
Activity 7.1 Log into Google Classroom Complete Google Form-Introduction to Lesson 7.1 Work as a table: 6 minutes to complete the questions Review as a class Submit Form
4
Activity 7.1-What Do Plants Produce in the Light? What is considered food for plants? Which of these food molecules is produced through photosynthesis?
5
Activity 7.1-What Do Plants Produce in the Light? After plants produce carbohydrate subunits during photosynthesis, they need to store them. What happened to those one subunit Glucose molecules over time? How have we tested for starch previously? What color does iodine turn when starch is present? Not present?
6
Learning Goals Conduct an experiment to determine the products of photosynthesis. Observe a demonstration of Elodea producing oxygen in the light and analyze measurements of dissolved oxygen over time.
7
Activity 7.1-What Do Plants Produce in the Light? Safety: No FOOD or DRINK Caution: Hot Plates Wear your googles Aprons/Lab Coats Iodine stains
8
Activity 7.1-What Do Plants Produce in the Light? Procedures: (work as pairs) 1.Using scissors cut in half your Geranium leaf (light) and Geranium leaf (dark) Each pair will receive half of each leaf type 2.Boil the leaf pieces in water for five minutes (Boiling opens up the cells of the leaves) Student 1- Hot Plate and Student 2-Timer 3.Complete questions 5 and 6 (predict). Share your predictions with your teacher. _____________________________________________________________________________ 4. Get two small cups. Label one Dark and the other Light. 5. Place the leaves in the correct cups. 6. Cover each leaf in the cup with iodine solution. 7. Remove each leaf from the cup (keeping track of which is light and which is dark), place them on a paper towel, and pat dry. 8. Observe the color of each leaf. 9. Complete Data Table in IQWST and the Making Sense Questions.
9
Activity 7.1-What Do Plants Produce in the Light? Recap: How does covering the leaves in aluminum foil affect how much light they get? Which leaf type carried out photosynthesis?
10
Learning Goals Conduct an experiment to determine the products of photosynthesis. Observe a demonstration of Elodea producing oxygen in the light and analyze measurements of dissolved oxygen over time.
11
Activity 7.1-What Do Plants Produce in the Light? Can Elodea carry out photosynthesis like the geranium? Observe Elodea Each pair will record data every minute for 3 minutes. While you wait: 1.Complete Reading 7.1 in IQWST 2.www.biomanbio.com and complete the photosynthesis/respiration game and/or Enzymatic!www.biomanbio.com
12
Activity 7.1-What Do Plants Produce in the Light? Game time! -Photosynthesis Relay Race: (Student 3 will need a cell phone with a flash light) Student 1-hop-retrieve Water or Carbon Dioxide Student 2-skip-retrieve Water or Carbon Dioxide Student 3-walk backwards-Turn on Cell Phone Light and retrieve Oxygen or Sugar (Glucose) Student 4-carry a ball between their knees and retrieve Oxygen or Sugar (Glucose)
13
Driving Questions Board Will be regularly used to add new information, answer questions posted, and to add new questions. All students must participate. Make sure to use the correct color sticky for your class period.
14
Pack everything up. Please put markers/crayons/col ored pencils back where they belong.
