3 Battle of Bull Run 1 st battle of the war –A.K.A. Battle of Manassas Union troops march toward Richmond, VA in July of 1861 “Battle to end the war” –Going to be fun

4 Battle of Bull Run McDowell leads Union troops- poorly trained- could barely survive the march to Manassas. Citizens and politicians came to watch “the war” with their picnic baskets.

5 Battle of Bull Run McDowell met Confederate army of Beauregard and pushed Confederates back until…

6 Battle of Bull Run Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson held the line.

9 Battle of Bull Run Union gave up and retreated. Confederates blow up bridge. –Chaos and confusion with onlookers and wagons blocking the way. Union troops run back to Washington, DC

14 War in the West General Ulysses S. Grant was put in charge of the Union troops in the west Nothing like McClellan in the east –Grant was bold and always willing to attack

15 War in the West Feb. of 1862- Grant led force into Tennessee- moving troops down river –Captured Fort Henry and Fort Donelson –Refused negotiations with Confederate commanders thus got nickname “Unconditional Surrender” Grant

16 Battle of Shiloh April 6, 1862- Confederate General Johnston attacked Grant’s sleeping camp in southern Tenn.

19 Battle of Shiloh Both armies push each other back and forth Grant gets reinforcements when an Ohio regiment arrives Union push Confederates back to Mississippi River

20 Battle of Shiloh Both sides claimed a victory- but Union was true winner About 10,000 casualties on each side Grant criticized back home for death count- ask Lincoln to replace Grant

21 Battle of Shiloh I can’t spare this man; he fights.

22 War in the East continued Robert E. Lee was put in charge of the Confederate army in June of 1862 –Originally asked to lead Union army but would not go against Virginia –Devout Christian –Not a fan of slavery or secession

23 War in the East continued Lee and McClellan met and fought a series of battles in June and July of 1862- Seven Days Battles –Union retreats –Confederate victories kept the Union from attacking Richmond

24 War in the East continued Lee and McClellan met and fought a series of battles in June and July of 1862- Seven Days Battles –Union retreats –Confederate victories kept the Union from attacking Richmond

25 War in the East continued Lincoln sends more troops under General Pope to take Richmond Confederate General Jackson stops Pope’s army at Manassas in August of 1862 –Confederates win again- 2 nd Battle of Bull Run –Lee is now ready to take the fighting to the North.
