A refugee is a person who flees for refuge or safety, especially to a foreign country, as in time of a political upheaval, war, etc.
3
What happened to force them to become refugees? ~ In August, 1945, Soviet Union declared war on Japan and proceeded to invade and occupy Manchuria and North Korea. The Japanese began to flee and in the process, died at the hands of the Soviets, Chinese, and the Koreans.
4
What was the outcome of the struggle that led to this? ~ The country was divided into zones (North Korea and South Korea) of occupation by the victorious Americans and Soviets, and various individuals and organizations across the political spectrum from Communists to the far Right claimed to speak for an independent Korean government. The Soviets and Americans failed to reach an agreement on a unified Korean government, and in 1948 two separate governments were established, each claiming to be the legitimate government of all Korea: the Republic of Korea in Seoul, in the American zone, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in Pyongyang, in the Soviet zone.
5
What group of people is affected and why? ~ People in Sudan are affected because of violence between civilians and the armed forces. ~ Unrest in the Syrian Arab Republic has been mounting since March 2011 leading to displacement of tens of thousands of civilians. As of April 2012 more than 55 thousand have fled to neighboring countries.
6
What challenges and dangers are the group of refugees facing? Challenges for Syria- In Lebanon, many refugees are in a precarious situation, with little or no financial resources. Also, many refugees have arrived with limited means to cover basic needs, and those who could at first rely on savings or support for host families are now increasingly in need for assistance. Dangers in Sudan- UNHCR anticipates continuing arrivals over the coming months with clashes continuing and humanitarian conditions deteriorating in the conflict zones.
7
How are they surviving? ~ UNHCR will fund to pay for the urgent delivery of relief supplies and move refugees away to the camps in Sudan. ~ The United Nations and its humanitarian partners issued in appeal in March 2012 for US $84 million to support Syrian refugees.
