2. Analogies Analogy- Compares two things that are similar in some way; used to explain or make something easier to understand. Context Clues- use the information in a passage or sentence to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words or phrases Synonyms- words have similar meanings Motivate is to inspire as bliss is to delight

3. Analogies, continued Antonyms- words that have opposite meanings…. Exciting is to dull as hero is to villain Relationship of Degree - the two words will mean the same thing but to a different extent; For example, confident and arrogant or mock and imitate Part-Whole - the first word in the analogy is a small part of the second word. For example, toe is to foot as finger is to hand. OR episode is to television series as song is to album.

4. Steps to Analogical Statements 1. Find the relationship between the two underlined words. Are they synonyms or antonyms? Part-whole or degree? HINT: Determine whether the word is positive or negative in the sentence. This will help pick the relationship! 2. Find THAT SAME relationship in the answer choice analogies. (second set of words) **Remember!** We are not matching definitions and we are not likely to know what the underlined words mean!

5. Active/Passive Voice Active voice- the subject is doing the action. Passive voice- the subject is not directly doing the action. Passive Voice uses one of the following words as the verb: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been
