2
Fact or Fib #1 Tides on the Texas cost usually occur twice a day.
3
FACT The gravitational attraction of the moon causes the oceans to bulge out in the direction of the moon. Another bulge occurs on the opposite side, since the Earth is also being pulled toward the moon (and away from the water on the far side). Since the earth is rotating while this is happening, two tides occur each day.
4
Fact or Fib #2 The sun rises once a day in the east
5
FACT The sun rises once every day in the east and sets in the west.
6
Fact or Fib #3 A full moon occurs about every 10 days
7
FIB A full moon occurs every 30 days.
8
Fact or Fib #4 Low pressure causes rainy or stormy weather.
9
FACT A low pressure system is a whirling mass of warm, moist air that generally brings stormy weather.
10
Fact or Fib #5 Trees are considered a nonrenewable resource.
11
FIB Trees are considered a RENEWABLE resource because they can be planted in grown within a lifetime. Non-renewable resources include coal, oil, and minerals.
12
Fact or Fib #6 Aluminum is considered a nonrenewable resource.
13
FACT Aluminum is a metal found in the earth’s crust and is nonrenewable. This is one of the reasons we recycle aluminum cans.
14
Fact or Fib #7 Sound can’t be heard on the moon because the moon rotates too fast.
15
FIB Sound can’t be heard on the moon because there is no AIR.
16
Fact or Fib #8 Riding a bike would be an example of sound energy.
17
FIB Riding a bike with the moving gears would be considered mechanical energy.
18
Fact or Fib #9 The brown fur of an animal in the arctic turns white in the winter to keep it cool.
19
FIB Their fur would most likely turn white to help it hide from predators. The white fur would blend in with the white snow of the arctic.
20
Fact or Fib #10 A mixture of sand and water is considered a solution.
21
FIB Sand and water is considered a MIXTURE because the sand DOES NOT dissolve into the water.
22
Fact or Fib #11 Students should always wait for the teacher’s instructions before doing anything in the science lab.
23
FACT SAFETY FIRST!
24
Fact or Fib #12 A ripe fruit falling and splitting open helps the species by spreading the seeds.
25
FACT Plants reproduce and ensure the survival of their species by their ability to spread their seeds.
26
Fact or Fib #13 Gas changing into a liquid is called condensation.
27
FACT Condensation is the change of water from its gaseous form (water vapor) into liquid water.
28
Fact or Fib #14 A butterfly undergoes incomplete metamorphosis with only 3 life cycle stages.
29
FIB A butterfly undergoes COMPLETE METAMORPHOSIS with 4 LIFE CYCLE STAGES.
30
Fact or Fib #15 The stages of metamorphosis include egg, larva, pupa, adult.
31
FACT The egg is always first. Then larva (l comes before p), pupa, and adult is always last.
32
Fact or Fib #16 A Thermometer is best for measuring mass
33
FIB A thermometer measures temperature. A balance measures mass.
34
Fact or Fib #17 How much space something occupies is called volume.
35
FACT Volume is the amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or that is enclosed within a container.
36
Fact or Fib #18 Particles of a liquid are loosely packed and take the shape of their container.
37
FACT The particles of a liquid are loosely packed and do take the shape of whatever container they are in.
38
Fact or Fib #19 The following is an example of a food web:
39
FIB It is an example of a food chain. This is an example of a food web:
40
Fact or Fib #20 A river delta is formed by volcanoes erupting.
