2
What is Peptic Ulcer Disease? Open sores in the digestive tract Two types Gastric ulcers Forms in lining of stomach Duodenal ulcers Forms in lining of duodenum (upper part of small intestine)
3
Causes Caused by the bacteria H. pylori and Aspirin or NSAIDS(Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) they secrete urease which breaks down mucus membrane the area that lacks the mucus membrane is damaged by gastric acid It is a myth that stress and spicy foods can cause Peptic Ulcers, but they can aggravate symptoms Occurs more in elderly people H. pylori has many flagella that it uses to propel itself
4
Diagram Peptic ulcers usually occur in the lower gastric or upper duodenal region.
5
Symptoms of Peptic Ulcer Some patients may not show symptoms However common symptoms include: Burning pain in the abdominal region Vomiting Appetite change Bleeding in stomach/duodenum Weight loss
6
Treatment Antibiotic that kills H. pylori Medications that block acid production Antacids that neutralize stomach acids Refraining from smoking and alcohol medications called cytoprotective agents can help protect the tissues that line your stomach and small intestine The outside of the pill dissolves in the stomach and the alkaline contents inside neutralizes stomach acid

Statistics In the United States, about 10% of the population will develop a duodenal ulcer at some point in their lives. Peptic ulcer disease affects about 4.6 million people annually. The occurrence of peptic ulcer disease is similar in men and women, but men are slightly more likely to get a peptic ulcer. Approximately 11%-14% of men and 8%-11% of women will develop peptic ulcer disease in their lifetime. The mortality rate of peptic ulcer disease is approximately one death per 10,000 cases. The mortality rate due to ulcer hemorrhage is approximately 5%.hemorrhage
